What Happened: The White House is urging the United Nations to reprimand China and Russia for allegedly providing refined petroleum products to North Korea in violation of U.N. sanctions and quotas, The Wall Street Journal reported July 12.

Why It Matters: Amid a lull in North Korean outreach, the United States is attempting to incentivize cooperation from Pyongyang by re-emphasizing its maximum pressure campaign designed to isolate North Korea.

Background: U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed an agreement to work toward denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and improve ties, but concrete plans to achieve those goals have been slow to materialize.
